Gap Year Soundtrack
We asked our volunteers, both past and present, what songs have been on loop in their brains during their gap year. Some songs were sacred, some secular, but all meaningful to a year when your world is tipped upside down.
The River of Dreams - Billy Joel, Becky
I love listening to this song over and over (I never get bored!) because I have done my best processing of this year while listening to it. This song is about being on a journey, facing obstacles, but feeling like there's something constantly telling you to keep going.
Dias Intensos - Cultura Profética, Jaime
This song is about the "intense days" the song is about those days when the work is not going as well as you would like to, this song reminds me that I'm human and even when I do not want to make mistakes certainly I'm going to make some mistakes. This song remind me that the bad days come with the experience as well but at the end it doesn't matter my mistakes or my wrong guesses because I prefer make mistakes trying to do a difference rather than do nothing which is a big mistake itself
Oceans - Hillsong United, Justin
"Oceans" has been a good song for me to listen to pray about this year. I think it's encouraged me to rely in God throughout this year and reminds me of his presence and love that constantly surrounds me but also encourages me to get outside of my comfort zone. It has made me very thankful for my relationship with God.
Trust - Kristene Mueller, Ashlyn
It's about when we go through the tough times we are becoming stronger. "You are making me a mountain that can not be moved" I hold on to that line and know that God has a purpose for what I'm going through no matter how tough it is.
Trusty and True - Damien Rice, Kaci
It's about wanting to be more than we're capable of, and how as humans we can't reach perfection.
On My Bones - Kendall Payne, Sally
I was 18 and really sorting through who I was created to be and how to make a difference. My year was wonderful and painful. I was very lonely and yet I learned so much about true love during that time...love from the sacrifice of a savior and love from a village who welcomed and took care of a stranger and how we learned so much from each other during that year.
I Won't Settle - Jesus Culture, Noemi
I got so excited by the thought of growing to be that person God dreamed of. As I look back I can see the specific things where God has formed me during my gap year!
Karma Chameleon - Culture Club, Felicitas
I heard that song nearly everyday in the bus in the way to work.
10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) - Matt Redman, Kaley
It has seemed to follow me around this year playing at different events at different parts of my faith development.
Grace - U2, Aubrey
I love the line, "Grace finds beauty in ugly things." During my year, I learned a lot about unconditional grace. At my site I saw people who often were hard to love and seemed to make the same bad choices over and over, but my site never gave up on anyone. They continued to offer unconditional grace over and over to everyone. It was such a learning experience for me and my understanding of the unconditional grace God finds in us even in our own ugliness.
How Great is Our God - Chris Tomlin, Nadine
At the very beginning of my year (2005/6) we went to Grapevine and there I heard this song for the first time. It became my song for that year as throughout I was able to experience how great God truly is.
Thinkin Bout You - Frank Ocean, Vickey
It's great when I'm happy, sad and all the spaces in between.
