What? Volunteer as a history & culture tour guide

Where? Funchal 

When? 9 - 12 months of service - due to funding the earliest start for this opportunity is Spring 2018

About the project: The project (developed by the University of Madeira Students’ Union) offers local people and visitors an opportunity to learn more about the rich history of the city, enhancing the acquaintance of the importance of Funchal’s heritage. 

Summary of role: The volunteers will participate in all phases of preparation and delivery of the guided visits for all kinds of visitors, from tourists to local pupils. Members of the Students’ Union will support the volunteers throughout all the stages of the tasks, by teaching and giving all the necessary information required to execute all activities. Volunteers will work in historical places, buildings, exhibitions and monuments accompanying the visitors and explaining the history of the landmarks, streets and buildings, while also studying and broadening the knowledge needed to fulfil their duties. The volunteers will also support any other activities that are related to the project, like translation of documents, planning cultural activities or helping with the promotion of the attractions or in the museum shop.

Volunteer Requirements:


  • Passion for working with people
  • Interest in History and culture
  • Aged 18-30


  • Willingness to learn Portuguese

Cost: free (funded through Erasmus+)

Funding for 2017 has not been awarded - The project will reapply for 2018.

Volunteers will be expected to promote the Erasmus+ programme during their service
